Suicide

1. Suicide is a sin

2. When a child of God takes their life; they can be forgiven

2a. Holy Spirit intercedes for children of God; when our mind does not function correctly

3. All who are not a child of God are eternally lost; when they take their own lives

4. How our God helps us avoid the temptation to give up; take our lives

A child of God; brother or sister in Christ; believer; Christian; has the Holy Spirit living in our hearts

*So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Ro 8:8-9 NKJV+

1. Suicide is a sin

Our God would not have us kill anyone, including ourselves, without justification. He would not have us murder anyone, including ourselves, by our carelessness or negligence.

*“You shall not murder. [3. The Hebrew word also covers causing human death through carelessness or negligence] Ex 20:13 ESV+

A child of God knows our body is the temple of our God, for the Holy Spirit lives within our hearts. And if anyone would destroy our God’s holy temple, our God will destroy Him. This includes those who willfully take their own life, destroying their own temple where our God wants to live.

*Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 1Co 3:16-17 ESV+

*for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. Ro 14:8 NASB+

A Christian’s physical body belongs to our Heavenly Father; for He has purchased us to be His own children, with the blood Jesus shed on the cross to redeem us from our sins. Our body no longer belongs to us, nor can we use it in any way we please; including committing suicide, ending our own physical life.

*Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body. 1Co 6:19-20 NASB+

*And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. Rev 9:5 NASB+

Our lives are the most expensive, most valuable commodity upon this earth. For Jesus purchased us with His life, which is priceless; is far more valuable to our Heavenly Father than anything this world will ever be able to produce. Christ’s atoning grace on the cross can never be purchased with money, goods, or any works we can perform. But our Savior will freely give it to anyone who will no longer live for themselves; but give up their human will and live for Him.

*knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 1Pe 1:18-19 NASB+

*and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. 2Co 5:15 NKJV+

We must understand that we all have a purpose in our Father’s plan of salvation. No matter how big or how small the work He gives us to do; it is important. Our Father wants us to keep living until our work is completed, and only He knows when our work is done; and then He will take us home to Heaven.

*Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 1Co 12:4-6 ESV+

*His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ Matt 25:12 ESV+

Jesus would have us give up our lives for His sake; standing up for Him, never denying Him as our God. And He would also have us help, save, and protect others; even at the risk of our own lives.

*For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Matt 16:25 NKJV+

*Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. Jn 15:13 NKJV+

And there is nothing wrong in asking our Father to take us home, when we are weary, in pain, or close to death. Yet we must always end our prayer to our Father with “Your will be done,” for His will is always right, and we should trust His decisions. When one’s body cannot live on its own in some situations it may be good to remove life support; after praying to our Father about it.

*Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; Phil 4:6 NKJV+

*He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done." Matt 26:42 NASB+

2. When a child of God takes their life, they can be forgiven See How Our Sins Are Forgiven

All of our sins can be forgiven, including suicide, which is murder. The only unforgiveable sin is blaspheming the Holy Spirit, because if we reject the Spirit, we can never come to Jesus, and the Spirit cannot sanctify us.

*"Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. Matt 12:31 ESV+

*Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 1Co 12:3 ESV+

*that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Ro 15:16 NKJV+

The Spirit sanctifies those who believe, by forgiving all of our sins through Christ’s atoning grace on the cross; when we commit the sin. So our spiritual being can continually remain holy, and the Spirit can always dwell within it.

*But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 2Thess 2:13 ESV+

*For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." Ro 1:17 NIV+

Our Father can look in our hearts and know who loves Him above all things; even though in human weakness one may have made a mistake and taken their own life. These the Spirit has sanctified and by their faith their sins were forgiven as they were committed; including taking their own life. Their soul is eternally in Heaven with Jesus.

While believers who rebel against our Father’s will, and believe people have the right to choose when to die, do not really love our God above all things. The Spirit has been pushed out of their hearts and if they take their lives their sins are not be forgiven. Their soul will be cast into Hades.

*Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Ro 5:1 NKJV+

*and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. Lk 16:23 ESV+

2a. Holy Spirit intercedes for children of God; when our mind does not function correctly

This includes a physical injury, mental illness, drugs, stress, or old age

The Spirit will intercede and sanctify believers who have the Holy Spirit living in their hearts when their mental capacity is impaired; when their mind does not have the ability to reason or function correctly. He will keep their spiritual being holy, in the Kingdom of God, until they are well; or until their souls are taken home to Heaven by Jesus. Though their impaired mind might cause them to commit many sinful acts, including taking their own lives.

*In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Ro 8:26-27 NIV+

*For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Ro 14:17 ESV+

3. All who are not a child of God are eternally lost; when they take their own lives

Suicide is a tragic event for those who are not children of God. And for believers who willfully rebel against our God, disobey Him by taking their own lives; thus pushing the Spirit out of their hearts. For when they take their lives, they no longer have a chance to surrender to the will to our Father, repent and have their sins forgiven. Upon the death of their physical body their soul is taken to Hades where they are held in torment until the White Throne Judgment.

*"He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Jn 3:18 NASB+

*And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt 10:28 NKJV+

4. How our God helps us avoid the temptation to give up; take our lives

We must remember that our Father is faithful to His children, will not let us be tempted beyond our ability to resist. And will always provide a way of escape, whether through prayer, the Spirit strengthening us as we read God’s Word, or being with our brothers and sisters in Christ. And we are made stronger by our weakness, for then we must trust Jesus; not ourselves, or the world to save us. And His power will rest on us, giving us the strength to overcome anything.

*No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1Co 10:13 ESV+

*But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 2Co 12:9 NIV+

Our Father will never leave us, and Jesus will always be with us. Help is just a prayer away, which will us children of God through any problem or trouble we will ever face. .

*Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."  Heb 13:5 NIV+

*teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  Matt 28:20 ESV+

And Jesus loves His brothers and sisters; through Him we can conquer all of our trials and temptations. We have the assurance, the comfort of knowing, nothing which has ever been created or made, either spiritual or physical, not even death will ever be able to separate us from our Savior’s love. We will always have a loving brother waiting to show us how valuable our lives our; for He was willing to shed His blood on the cross, so we could be His brothers and sisters eternally in Heaven.

*Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ro 8:37-39 NKJV+
